Steel City, City on the Move by Jo Peel

As well as visiting the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize exhibition when I was at the Millennium Gallery in Sheffield, I also took the time to see another exhibition: Steel City, City on the Move by Jo Peel.

The exhibition featured paintings, drawings, screen prints and video work showing the contrasts between Sheffield and its twinned city Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Both cities have been shaped by the steel industry and this is shown in Jo Peel's work.

I have always been interested and had a passion for art, but since finishing my art A Level I haven't really done much or seen much art as opposed to photography. I was originally going to visit the Millennium Gallery just for this exhibition as I thought it sounded really interesting (but saw on the website that the Taylor Wessing Prize was currently being shown as well).

The pieces were very colourful and they immediately drew you in to look at the whole exhibition. The pieces were set up next to each other as one from Sheffield and the other from Pittsburgh. It was really interesting to see the contrast between the two places and the similarities that the artist captured as well.

The paintings and drawings featured restaurants, shops and factories in both cities, showing the comparisons and similarities between the two places both shaped by the steel industry. There were also some paintings of the steel works as well.

The video work was several documentary pieces interviewing people working in both Sheffield and Pittsburgh at pubs, grocery shops, tattoo parlours and bike shops. The short documentaries shown the clear difference between the two cities and were really interesting to watch, as even though I live really close to Sheffield, I don't actually know that much about it. The videos also made me interested in Pittsburgh, somewhere that I didn't know anything about (other than it being in the state of Pennsylvania). It seems like an exciting city, with lots of redevelopment going on to add to the arty scene.

I really enjoyed seeing this exhibition. The art really caught my eye and was be something I would have up on my wall. As well as this, it made me think about how a similar idea could be worked into a photography project, something I am interested in exploring in second year.
